La Liga investigating alleged Sevilla-Cadiz match fixing

‘El Confidencial’ reports that La Liga has started to summon players who took part in the 36th La Liga matchday match between Sevilla and Cadiz to investigate possible match-fixing.

In the run-up to the 36th La Liga matchday, Cadiz were in 18th place with 29 points, five behind Celta Vigo on 34. Sevilla were in 12th place with a tally of 41, more than enough to have already secured safety at this stage. That’s why the visit of the Andalusian side carried no particular ambition for Quique Sanchez Flores’ side, who lost 1-0.

The thing is, even before kick-off, Rayo Vallecano contacted La Liga to report that they had received leaks of possible match-fixing. The Sevilla side had nothing at stake, but their opponents did, so the match was more important for one side than the other, with teams like Celta, Rayo, Mallorca and Las Palmas keeping an eye on the situation.

According to ‘El Confidencial’, the employers’ association on Monday began to summon players who were at the Ramon Sanchez-Pizjuan stadium that day to testify in order to investigate whether there had been a fix to what happened on the pitch.

Critics pointed to a lack of intensity from the Andalusian capital side, which has raised suspicions.READ MORE

Cadiz ended the season relegated despite their derby win, as they finished 18th, as they began the matchday of their trip to Seville, with five points behind Rayo. No further details have emerged from the investigation, which, for the moment, is only in its initial stages. The next few days will be key because they will be made up from the point of view of the players themselves who took to the field.
