Laporta explains his change of mind on Xavi

Joan Laporta aggravated the bad public image that Barcelona had left with the ‘Xavi Hernandez case’. Speaking on the
‘Barca One’ podcast, the club’s new official channel, the president was questioned about the change of course in the
coach’s continuity and his decision was based on two reasons: the coach’s statements and the appearance of the option of signing Hansi Flick.

This Tuesday, Joan Laporta appeared on “El podcast del president” on “Barca One”, the club’s new TV programme, in
which he reviewed Barcelona’s current affairs. Among other topics, he referred to the chronology of the dismissal of
Xavi Hernandez, a coach with whom he celebrated with tears and just a few weeks before the continuity of the same.

Laporta had good words for someone who, according to him, “did a good job”: ‘He took over the team at a time of
maximum difficulty. Last year, he won the league and the Super Cup. However, he was soon to change the course of the

This season, things didn’t work out to the point that Xavi said he wouldn’t continue. I accepted that he would finish the season because he is a ‘Cule’ at heart and it was better not to change coach mid-season. Xavi rectifies at the end of the season and tells us that he thinks he is capable of making Barca champions”.

At the time, all parties agreed to continue after past doubts and ups and downs. But there was something that prompted an abrupt change of decision: “This is the background. Xavi told us in February that he didn’t think he could take the pressure any more. Then there is a press conference in which he changes his discourse and a meeting with the sporting director in which he changes his requests. That makes me think that we need to give a new impetus to get the best out of this squad”.

Laporta, furthermore, excused himself for the opportunity the club had to get their current coach: “The option of Flick appeared, who sees himself capable of competing with anyone with this squad,” he added.Sevilla have confirmed

That was decisive. I think we have ended up in a very elegant way with Xavi. He has kept his word, we have kept our word and we have reached an agreement. The doors are open to him because he is a ‘Culer’. We have finished well and, now, we are turning around to continue winning. It was all very forced when we decided on his continuity. Xavi is a legend and his enthusiasm made us take the decision to ratify him.”
