MMA Fans React After Islam Makhachev Claims Dustin Poirier Is Not A Champion-Level Fighter On Twitter

The top of the UFC lightweight division is in a bit of an awkward position right now given the current schedule.

When looking at who should be next to face the champion Islam Makhachev, many would either point to the BMF
champion Justin Gaethje or the winner of Arman Tsarukyan versus Charles Oliveira.

Unfortunately, all three of those contenders are booked for UFC 300 on April 13, and with Makhachev hoping for
a June return, the timelines look unlikely to match up.

This leaves the former interim champion Dustin Poirier, who bounced back from his loss to Gaethje last year with a trademark performance against Benoît Saint Denis at UFC 299, in a good position to avail that title shot.READ MORE

After Makhachev stated that in an ideal scenario, it likely wouldn’t be “The Diamond” being lined-up next, Louisiana’s finest had this to say in an interview with MMA Junkie.

“That’s on him. I’ve done more in the sport of mixed martial arts than he has. I’ve been around a long time, I was doing this before it was cool and I’m still here. Still here doing it at the highest level. I can beat anybody in the world and I hope he’s next.”
